The Brazilian Committee for Rock Mechanics (CBMR) is pleased to invite the international community to the 10th Latin American Rock Mechanics Symposium (LARMS 2026), to be held from 26 to 28 August 2026 in Brasília, Brazil. Under the theme “Rock Mechanics for a Sustainable Future: Innovating in Mining, Energy, and Infrastructure,” the symposium will bring together researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders to discuss the role of rock mechanics in addressing major global challenges, including sustainability, energy transition, and resilient infrastructure. The event will highlight both emerging technologies—such as digitalization and artificial intelligence—and traditional core topics in rock mechanics, fostering integration between academia and industry. As part of its advancing technical program, LARMS 2026 is pleased to announce its first confirmed keynote speakers, representing leading institutions and industry worldwide. Professor Manchao He, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the State Key Laboratory for Tunnel Engineering at the China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), is internationally recognized for his contributions to rock mechanics, particularly in landslide prediction, large deformation control in rock masses, and innovation in mining technologies. Dr. Luís Lamas, Principal Researcher and Head of the Rock Mechanics and Modelling Unit at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC), Portugal, has also been confirmed. He has served as Secretary-General of the ISRM since 2003 and currently coordinates the expert group responsible for the revision of Eurocode 7 on Rock Engineering, playing a key role in bridging research and engineering practice. Another distinguished speaker is Esteban Hormazábal, Executive Director and Corporate Rock Mechanics Consultant at SRK Consulting (Chile), and ISRM Vice President for Latin America. With more than 30 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, and instrumentation, he has contributed extensively to the development of applied solutions in mining and infrastructure projects. LARMS 2026 will be held in conjunction with the XXII Brazilian Congress on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, one of the largest geotechnical events in Latin America, which gathered more than 2,000 participants in its last edition. This joint event will provide a unique platform for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration. Brasília, the capital of Brazil and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is internationally renowned for its modernist architecture designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa. The city offers excellent infrastructure, convenient international access, and a pleasant climate in August, creating ideal conditions for both technical discussions and networking. We warmly invite you to join us in Brasília and be part of this important event, contributing to the advancement of rock mechanics and its role in building a more sustainable and resilient future. GeoEng2030 – Call for bids launched The four FedIGS societies—ISSMGE, ISRM, IAEG, and IGS—will join forces for GeoEng2030, a landmark joint meeting to be held in 2030.
FedIGS is committed to transparency and the highest standards of professional ethics. For this reason, FedIGS published clear bid guidelines outlining the full selection process, including voting procedures. These guidelines have already been sent to the National Groups of all FedIGS member societies. Applicants are required to submit their bids according to the specified timetable, and the successful bid will be selected through a vote of the FedIGS Board at the beginning of 2027. The decision to organize GeoEng 2030 builds on the precedent set by GeoEng 2000, held in Melbourne, Australia—a remarkable conference that fostered closer collaboration and coordination among the leading societies in geo-engineering. That event laid the groundwork for discussions that eventually led to the formation of the Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies (FedIGS). Go to the top of the Newsletter.

Review of the 1st International Conference on Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, Mexico The “First International Conference on Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering”, organized by the Mexican Society of Geotechnical Engineering (SMIG) and the Mexican Association of Tunnel and Underground Works Engineering (AMITOS), also with the collaboration of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), and the International Association of Tunnels and Underground Spaces (ITA-AITES), was successfully held on 19-20 March at the Jose Luis Sanchez Bribiesca auditorium hall of the Engineering Tower, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Mexico City. This event presented advances, research and practices on relevant topics and brought together national and international specialists and professionals with recognized experience, namely: R. Ulusay (Turkiye), S. Fontoura (Brazil), L. Alejano (Spain), M. Manica (Mexico), C. Carranza – Torres (USA), A. Samaniego (Peru), E. Hormazabal (Chile) and A. Marulanda (Colombia). The sessions highlighted the complexity and importance of carrying out a detailed characterization of rock masses, namely discontinuities, and discussed the variables that have the greatest influence on the behavior and stability of any infrastructure and/or mining project. Regarding topics such as geotechnical design and numerical modeling, although significant progress has been made, these still face major challenges associated with defining representative parameters, sometimes intangible, and the inherent complexity of incorporating rock masses to model the behavior of the ground. Issues related to the characterization of sedimentary and igneous formations for deep geomechanics were presented. Finally, it is worth highlighting the presentation on integrated and multifunctional approaches that ensure that, by aligning technical considerations, environmental and social factors, would allow for improved decision-making and underground space planning to reduce long-term risks. The event was well attended by students, teachers, suppliers and professionals in the fields of geology, geotechnics and mining, who exchanged opinions, knowledge and experiences, which allowed them to understand the current context and trends in rock mechanics and rock engineering.
