Dear ISRM Members and Rock Mechanics Colleagues

The eighth ISRM Online Lecture will be broadcast on 18 December 2014, at 10 a.m. GMT. It will be delivered by Prof. Resat Ulusay and the title will be "Rock Characterization, Testing and Monitoring: Highlighting the ISRM Suggested Methods".

Info on how to attend will be posted at www.isrm.net shortly before the time of the lecture. Please assure that your internet connection is fast enough to view high-definition video. The lecture will remain online so that those unable to attend at this time will be able to do it later. Prof. Ulusay will reply to the questions sent to the email webmaster@isrm.net until 23 December.

Professor Resat Ulusay obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from Hacettepe University in 1975 and PhD degree from Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey, in 1991 in engineering geology.

His main research activities are connected to engineering geology, rock mechanics and soil mechanics; particularly slope stability, rock mass characterization, laboratory and in-situ testing, earthquake-induced ground deformations, and swelling.

Between 1975 and 1996, he worked at Mineral Research and Exploration Institute (MTA) of Turkey and was trained on Mining Geotechnology by Golder Associates and assigned to establish Rock and Soil Mechanics Division and Laboratories under the auspices of United Nations. During this period, he was involved in a number of geotechnical projects as engineer/manager, service chief and department coordinator. He became Associate Professor in 1994. Since December 1995 he has been working at the Applied Geology Division of Geological Engineering Department at Hacettepe University. He became full Professor in 2000. Also he has been a part-time instructor in METU since 1992.

He supervised a number of MSc and PhD theses and authored many research papers. He is also the editorial board member of some international journals. He is the President of ISRM Commission on Testing Methods, a member of ISRM Design Methodology Commission, President of Turkish Society of Engineering Geology and a member of Turkish Earthquake Advisory Board.  He also participated to some international collaborative research projects and is the co-editor and editor of the ISRM Blue Book and Orange Book, respectively
